Discovery Saturday, Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center at Key West Florida

Saturday, 17 August, 2013

Kids in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to join the free, fun-filled Discovery Saturday at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center. Play games and make crafts while learning about the environment of the Florida Keys and the marine life that live here. Discovery Saturday is held the third Saturday of every month.

The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is a journey into the world of the native plants and animals of the Keys, both on land and underwater. Increased your awareness and appreciation of the need to protect and conserve the ecosystem of South Florida.

The Center features over 6,000 sq. ft of interactive, dynamic exhibits including a mock-up ofAquarius, the world's only underwater ocean laboratory.燗 walk through the Aquarius exhibit offers glimpses of the beautiful marine life at the reef and shows how scientists live beneath the sea during research expeditions.

Marine artwork depicting the sea, coral reefs and mangroves decorate the exterior wall of the Center, leading you to the main entrance.

Inside, explore exhibits interpreting the ecology of Keys' habitats, from the upland pinelands through the hardwood hammock and beach dune. You can travel down to mangrove shoreline, where you can learn about the seagrass flats, hardbottom, coral reef and deep-shelf communities. The Center's theater presents "Reflections of the Florida Keys," a short film on the diverse ecosystems found throughout the Florida Keys, by renowned filmmaker Bob Talbot.

Be sure to check out theMote Marine Laboratory燣iving Reef exhibit, which includes a 2,500-gallon reef tank with living corals and tropical fish, a live Reef Cam, and other displays that highlight the coral reef ecology & environment.
